During Idan Hayun’s guide dog partnership course in May 2023, Israel faced the five-day “Shield and Arrow” operation, with nearly 1,500 missiles fired from Gaza. Buddy, his guide dog, sensed the danger, warning Idan before sirens sounded. This unexpected training proved invaluable.
Idan, a longtime resident of Kiryat Shmona, was building independence with Buddy—navigating the city, exploring nature, and preparing for his drama therapy studies. But on October 7, 2023, everything changed. Rockets from Lebanon forced citywide evacuations. Concerned for Buddy’s safety, Idan first sought refuge in Rishon Le’Zion, then in a Netanya hotel, where they still reside amid uncertainty.
Despite loneliness, Idan found purpose. Children in the hotel eagerly awaited Buddy, giving him a chance to apply his future skills. He even picked up some Russian from an elderly woman. Each relocation requires him to relearn routes, yet he perseveres, longing for the day he and Buddy can return home to hikes, routine, and a brighter future.
