Martin Segal ז״ל‎

February 12, 2024

We are mourning the passing of Martin Segal, our dynamic and inspiring Executive Director of Israel Guide Dog Centre UK. Martin’s untimely death at the age of 58 has left a huge hole in the Israel Guide Dog Center family. Raised in the UK, he lived in Israel in Kibbutz Yagur for ten years. After his release from the IDF, Martin returned to Great Britain. Over the past twelve years, Martin transformed the UK Friends into a significant fund-raising organization. He was a passionate bike rider and a loving husband to Rebecca and his son Natan.

Below are excerpts from the eulogy delivered by Noach Braun, CEO & Co-founder of the Israel Guide Dog Center, at Martin’s funeral, Jan 2023

“Martin, I don’t know if I remember correctly, but I believe you first came to know us around 2011. You eventually joined an existing Friends organization in Great Britain that was far from meeting its potential. You grabbed onto it and took a completely different approach. With your vision and steely determination, you transformed a volunteer fundraising group and professionalized it. You have revolutionized all areas related to fundraising, taking your vast experience and bringing new life to the organization. You mobilized interest in our work, raised public awareness, built connections, expanded your donor base, and created an organization that we are all proud of.

You never stood by idly. Without hesitation, you always challenged us with your special combination of being both British and Israeli. Many times over the years, you told me that if life had permitted, you would have returned and would have permanently settled in Israel. Israel was in your heart and soul and a large part of your identity.

You will be missed by everyone who knew you. You are leaving us with a gaping hole; however, your legacy will continue to thrive. You have taught us to think outside the box and not fear to tread in uncomfortable waters. Although you are not here with us in person, your voice will not be silenced by your death but will continue to be heard. Martin, we love you. You will always be with us.”
